Can colors and patterns have universal, timeless appeal? The artist and designer Alisa Benfey has pondered this question throughout her creative practice and most recently in her Slow Color collection for Designtex. Using the techniques of Kusaki-zome, or the Japanese art of seasonal botanical dyeing, Benfey created motifs and hues that are true to nature and are inspired by the organic environment of Los Angeles, where she lives and works.
To create the layered and prismatic motif of Kusaki, artist Alisa Benfey sprinkled botanicals on fabric—including chrysanthemum petals, onion skins, and madder root—bundled it together, and steam dyed it. The pattern was then adapted into a durable, high-performance textile that honors the ephemeral, delicate beauty of nature and a handmade aesthetic.
Kusaki upholstery is the high-performance textile counterpart to our 50% biobased DNA Non-Vinyl Type II wallcovering, Kusaki Wall. The upholstery iteration of Kusaki features a pattern that is close to the scale of the original hand-dyed reference while the wallcovering’s graphic is enlarged to impart a textural look at a distance, with more detail up close.
