Can colors and patterns have universal, timeless appeal? The artist and designer Alisa Benfey has pondered this question throughout her creative practice and most recently in her Slow Color collection for Designtex. Using the techniques of Kusaki-zome, or the Japanese art of seasonal botanical dyeing, Benfey created motifs and hues that are true to nature and are inspired by the organic environment of Los Angeles, where she lives and works.
The kaleidoscopic hues of Kusaki, which is the Japanese word for “plants,” come from steam dyeing fabric with flower petals, onion skins, black beans, and hibiscus, among other botanicals. Artist Alisa Benfey scaled up the pattern to create a wallcovering that brings the beauty of the natural world indoors. From afar, its soft colors create an atmospheric effect, while up close it reads more textural.
Kusaki Wall is the 50% biobased DNA Non-Vinyl Type II wallcovering counterpart to our high-performance upholstery textile, Kusaki. The upholstery iteration of Kusaki features a pattern that is close to the scale of the original hand-dyed reference while the wallcovering’s graphic is enlarged to impart a textural look at a distance, with more detail up close.
